In a bid to chart a way towards “Improving University Effectiveness”, the Board of Trustees, Council, and Management of Bishop Stuart University embarked on a transformative 3-day retreat in Masaka, Uganda. Held at Hotel Brovad from 7th to 9th September 2023, the retreat brought together visionary leaders to deliberate on the University’s future and strengthen the commitment to excellence.
While addressing the gathering, the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, who also serves as the Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University, Rt. Rev. Assoc. Prof. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa urged all attendees to continue serving as faithful stewards in the journey that will drive the University to greater heights. His emphasis on aligning individuals with their inherent capabilities resonated deeply, stressing the importance of embracing the unique talents within the University community.
The Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Gershom Atukunda talked about the remarkable progress the University has made in infrastructure development. Notably, the construction of the Science Research Laboratories, which has now reached the roofing stage as well as the completion of the University Library Extension, were highlighted as significant achievements.
He also emphasized the University’s commitment to staff development, with support through Staff Short Grants. He said, “We support our staff to engage in research aimed at community engagement to foster socio-economic, health and environmental improvements. This approach stimulates research and publication in academia and the findings inform decision-making by policymakers. To date, 24 staff members have been supported in this regard.”
He also announced that BSU has launched the University Journal of Development, Education and Technology (JODET) which is now in the 3rd Issue of production since January 2023.
The Chairperson University Council, Prof. Kenneth Kagame, urged members to keep on the core functions of the University; to teach and mentor the youth for tomorrow and do everything heartily for the Lord, not for mankind. He highlighted the key achievements of the University, including Charter attainment, an increase in student numbers and infrastructure development.
A notable highlight of the retreat was the insightful presentation by Prof. John Mugisha, one of the distinguished facilitators invited. Prof. Mugisha emphasized the pivotal role of strategic planning and transformational activities in propelling institutions toward success. He emphasized that for any organization, including educational institutions like Bishop Stuart University, to thrive and make a substantial impact, it must strategically adapt new strategies and activities that lead to developing a transformational strategic plan.
