Bishop Stuart University (BSU) students under the BSU Debate Society participated in the East African Universities’ Debating Championship (EAUDC2023) held from 1st to 3rd September 2023 at Kigali Independent University’s (ULK) Campus, Rwanda. Organised by ASPIRE Debate Rwanda under the theme “Making Youth the Wheel of the People-led Economic Community”, the competition attracted 17 universities from four East African countries i.e. Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.
Bishop Stuart University’s debating team, consisting of three debaters: Agaba Ian, Mirembe Samarie, and Sigire Adonia, emerged as the overall winner among Universities in Uganda and the 4th best in East Africa.
Background
Founded in 2016, the debate contest aims at bringing together university students across the EAC member countries to share ideas, knowledge and information while celebrating the diversity and cultural richness of the region by using debate as a tool of engagement.
Our debaters performed exceptionally well during their participation in this event. They reached the partial quarter-finals stage, showcasing their ability and dedication to the art of debating. This achievement reflects positively on Bishop Stuart University’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting academic excellence.
Remarkably, our debaters achieved success in terms of individual speaks, representing Bishop Stuart University at a county level. This demonstrates the high caliber of our students and their potential for continued success in future competitions.
Sigire Adonia (Patron Representative and Former Guild President) was nominated to be a representative of Uganda on the Council for the East African Community Debate Championship for 3 years.
Our God Reigns.
