Bishop Stuart University (BSU) emerged victorious in both the debate and public speaking competitions at the Western Uganda Universities Debate Championship 2026, hosted by Uganda Pentecostal University in Fort Portal City from 9th to 10th October 2026.
The championship brought together 12 universities from across the region, providing a platform for students to demonstrate their communication, critical thinking, creativity and public speaking skills.
BSU’s team excelled in both competitions, winning the debate and public speaking championships. Mr. Azairwe Ayebare, a Law student, was crowned best debater and best speaker in Debate, while Ms. Nakayiwa Maria Regina, also a Law student, emerged victorious in the public speaking competition.
While receiving the team as they presented their medals and trophies to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Francis Mugisha commended the students for their outstanding performance and for raising the university’s profile. He noted that the victories portrayed BSU’s commitment to delivering transformative education that equips students with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to excel beyond the university.
Prof. Mugisha urged the students to embrace 21st-century skills, particularly effective communication, creativity and critical thinking, emphasising that these competencies should be demonstrated not only in academic work but also through debates and other co-curricular activities.
He further stressed the importance of communication skills in preparing students for their future careers and responsibilities, noting that the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently is essential for success in the wider world. “The students we are training are going out and they must shine out there,” Prof. Mugisha said.
