Bishop Stuart University (BSU) today, 5th September 2026, joined the Ministry of Water and Environment, through the Directorate of Water Resources Management, for the 5th edition of the River Rwizi Run held in Mbarara City. This year’s run was held under the theme “Stakeholders Championing the Restoration of River Rwizi,” bringing together stakeholders and members of the community to raise awareness and promote collective efforts towards the restoration and protection of River Rwizi.
The BSU team, led by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Rev. Dr. Charles Mukundane, participated in the run, voluntary community work and band performances. Several BSU students participated in the 5 km, 10 km and 21 km races, putting up impressive performances. The participating students who performed well were recognised with medals and cash prizes for their achievements. Bishop Stuart University has been a long-standing partner and supporter of the River Rwizi Run since its inception, reflecting the University’s commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
Speaking during the event, Mbarara City Mayor, Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, commended the organisers and partners for their continued efforts towards protecting River Rwizi. He called upon communities living along the river to plant trees and actively participate in its restoration. “It is everyone’s responsibility to protect this river, and we must protect what God created,” the Mayor said.
Mrs. Evelyn Kyomugisha, Secretary of the River Rwizi Catchment Area, appreciated all partners for their continued support towards the initiative. She particularly commended Bishop Stuart University for being a reliable partner and for consistently supporting the River Rwizi Run since its establishment.
The 5th River Rwizi Run served as a reminder that the restoration and protection of River Rwizi requires collective action from government institutions, institutions of learning, communities, development partners and other stakeholders.
