Yesterday, 4th September 2026, Bishop Stuart University (BSU) joined the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA) in a three-day medical caravan being held at St. John’s Nyabwina Secondary School in Sheema District. A team from BSU, led by Dr. Philimon Ahabwe from the Faculty of Health Sciences, participated in the ongoing AMDA community outreach programme that will last for 3 days.
AMDA is an umbrella association that brings together Catholics from the Archdiocese of Mbarara who live or work outside the Archdiocese. Its main objective is to give back to communities and empower people through an annual three-day outreach programme featuring a medical camp, empowerment talks and parish-level engagements. The initiative is built around AMDA’s seven pillars: Unity, Spiritual Development, Leadership Development, Economic Empowerment, Educational Development, Health and Wellness, and Environmental Sustainability. The flagship AMDA Medical Camp will provide free services to community members, including general healthcare, cancer screening, dental care and other medical services.
Speaking during the outreach, AMDA Chaplain Rev. Fr. Dr. Darius Magunda (PhD) said the team came to Nyabwina to serve all people in the district regardless of their religious affiliation. He noted that the initiative has been running since 2013 and appreciated the organisations, including Bishop Stuart University, that have supported the AMDA caravan over the years.
Representing Bishop Stuart University, Dr. Philimon Ahabwe mentored teenagers on the importance of education, encouraging them to remain focused and trust in God, noting that education can open opportunities for them to become whatever they aspire to be. Dr. Ahabwe further appreciated parents for supporting education and encouraged the community to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Bishop Stuart University. He noted that BSU welcomes students at different levels, from Certificate programmes to PhD studies.
The participation of Bishop Stuart University in the AMDA caravan is part of the University’s commitment to community engagement and giving back to society, in line with its strategic plan.
