Bishop Stuart University (BSU), through the Refugee and Host Community Youth Empowerment and Transformation Initiative (RETI) Project, funded by the Mastercard Foundation, joined young people at the Lugazi Youth Centre in Mbarara on Wednesday, 12th August 2026, to commemorate International Youth Day. The celebration was held under the theme “Transforming Young People Through Vocational Skills,” with discussions focusing on shared hopes, vulnerable regions and global solidarity in promoting opportunities for young people.
A major highlight of the event was the exhibition of products made by youths trained under the BSU RETI Project from Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Isingiro District. The young entrepreneurs showcased a wide range of products, including cosmetics, clothing, soap, organic fertilisers, yoghurt and other products. The students commended BSU and the RETI Project partners for equipping them with practical vocational skills and providing financial support to enable them to establish small businesses and income-generating projects.
The celebration also provided an opportunity for young people to reflect on the importance of having clear goals, remaining focused and demonstrating determination in pursuing their dreams. The youths were further urged to prioritise their health and wellbeing, particularly by protecting themselves against HIV/AIDS, which continues to pose a significant challenge among young people.
Through the RETI Project, Bishop Stuart University continues to support vulnerable youth, including refugees and members of host communities, by providing skills development and opportunities that can transform their lives and livelihoods.
