On 1st May 2026, students from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Bishop Stuart University (BSU) conducted a community outreach intervention program in Kasese Town and its surrounding suburbs. This initiative was part of our commitment to practical, competence-based training and community transformation.
With support from the Municipal Town Clerk and the Uganda Police Force, the students painted three zebra crossings along the town’s main street. Zebra crossings are critical in busy urban centers where pedestrian traffic is high. They enhance road safety by providing designated, visible points for pedestrians to cross, reduce accidents, protect school children and the elderly and promote orderly traffic flow. This intervention directly contributes to saving lives and fostering a culture of road discipline.
On the same day, the team also reached out to five vulnerable households identified by ASP, Ngelese Jane, the Officer in Charge of Family Welfare at Kasese Central Police Station and a proud alumna of BSU. The families received domestic relief items including soap, mosquito nets, bed sheets, clothing and non-perishable foodstuffs. ASP Jane not only helped identify the beneficiaries but also actively participated in the distribution. The families expressed gratitude to the students and the University for the timely support and for maintaining a visible, impactful presence in the Rwenzori region.
On 2nd May 2026, the outreach continued in Fort Portal City at Tooro Babies Home. Students and staff delivered essential supplies including sugar, soap, posho, rice, salt, scholastic materials, pampers, toilet tissue, diapers and other child-care necessities.
This exercise was more than charity because it formed part of the competence-based training model for social work students, where hands-on field engagement is essential. Through direct interaction with communities and institutions, our students translate classroom theory into real-world impact, building both professional skills and a spirit of service.
Social Work Department remains committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also socially responsive and community-oriented.
