Child protection is an important component at childhood at both local and international level. It is a cornerstone of child welfare. The existence of child maltreatment makes one to wonder what is wrong with child protection services. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to explore child maltreatment and child protection services so as to devise means of improving communities’ knowledge of child protection and reduce child maltreatment in the area. The study sought to address the following specific objectives: To explore the lived experiences of maltreated children in Mbarara City and Sheema District; To assess community members’ knowledge of child protection services available in Uganda; and To determine the factors influencing utilization of child protection services available in Mbarara City and Sheema District, Southwestern Uganda. The study adopted a cross sectional descriptive research design and a mixed research approach where a pragmatic phenomenological paradigm was used, incorporating both primary and secondary data. Analysis of data was based on thematic, content and descriptive analysis, using SPSS where findings were presented in narratives, in tables, charts and figures.
