Bishop Stuart University (BSU) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening education leadership by facilitating the South Ankole Diocese Annual Secondary School Headteachers, Board of Governors (BOG) and PTA Chairpersons Workshop 2026, held on 10th July 2025, at Ankole Resort Hotel in Ntungamo Town.
BSU facilitation team, including Dr. Enock Barigye (PhD), Dean of the Faculty of Education and Rev. Dr. Judith Arinaitwe (PhD), Head of the Department of Education, delivered presentations on strategic leadership, school management and effective school governance.
Speaking on Strategic Leadership and School Management, Dr. Enock Barigye emphasized that strategic leadership and management are distinct functions and should be approached differently. He noted that strategic leadership is essential for positioning schools for long-term success through deliberate planning and a clear vision for the future.
He urged Headteachers, Boards of Governors and PTA chairpersons to focus on long-range planning, quality education, and sustainable institutional growth. Dr. Barigye reminded Headteachers that teaching remains their primary responsibility and stressed that the quality of a school is largely shaped by their leadership. “The vision of a school is owned by the Board of Governors. Boards should deliberately plan for leadership succession to ensure continuity and institutional growth,” he said. He further encouraged BOG members to understand their roles, responsibilities, and limitations to provide effective governance.
Rev. Dr. Judith Arinaitwe commended secondary school Headteachers for providing opportunities to BSU education students to undertake school practice in their schools. She revealed that the Faculty has sent approximately 937 students for school practice this year in different schools. She also appreciated parents for entrusting Bishop Stuart University with the education of their children and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to offering quality training across its diverse academic programmes among learners.
Delivering her presentation on Effective School Governance, Rev. Dr. Arinaitwe called upon Boards of Governors to effectively execute their governance mandate by approving school policies, strategic plans, annual budgets, and monitoring implementation plans. She encouraged Headteachers to promote stability, accountability and teamwork within their schools by working closely with teachers and other stakeholders.
She also urged PTA members to mobilize parental support and provide constructive feedback to the headteacher and the Board of Governors on learner welfare, discipline, and academic performance. In her concluding remarks, Rev. Dr. Arinaitwe encouraged school leaders to uphold integrity, remain honest in their service, and foster love, unity, and mutual respect within their school communities.
Rev. Can. Alfred Turyamureeba, the Diocesan Secretary of South Ankole Diocese, thanked BSU team for sharing their expertise in education within the Diocese and called upon Headteachers, BOG and PTA chairpersons to maintain a good name in God’s work.
