NOTICE: GUIDANCE ON THE REQUIREMENTS OF 2-YEAR EXPERIENCE FOR NURSES AND MIDWIVES BEFORE UPGRADING
Reference is made to the notice issued on April 11, 2025, by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) regarding the two-year experience requirement for nurses and midwives before pursuing further training.
The UNMC mandates that all nurses and midwives must acquire at least two years of experience before advancing their studies. However, exceptions and clarifications apply as outlined below:
- Certificate to Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery
- A mandatory two-year experience is required before upgrading. The two years are counted from the date of first licensure with UNMC.
- Diploma (Direct Entry) to Bachelor’s Degree
- The two-year experience requirement applies to this category.
- Diploma (Extensor) to Bachelor’s Degree
- The two-year experience requirement does NOT apply to this category.
- Candidates may proceed immediately to upgrade. Candidates may also pursue other diploma programs, such as:
- Diploma in Advanced Palliative Care Nursing (ADPCN)
- Diploma in Critical Care Nursing
- Diploma in Public Health Nursing, etc.
- Bachelor’s Degree (Direct Entry) to Master’s Degree
- One (1) year of experience is required after internship before advancing.
- Bachelor’s Degree (Completion) to Master’s Degree
- One (1) year of experience is required after internship before upgrading.
