Bishop Stuart University (BSU) on Friday, 2 October 2026, joined the Ankole Diocese to celebrate Dr. Keith Waddell’s 90th birthday through the “Dr. Keith Waddell at 90 Eye Child Marathon”, held at the main offices of Ankole Diocese in Ruharo, Mbarara City. The marathon, which stood on the theme “Run for Sight, run for hope, run for the children”, was organised to raise funds to support medical treatment and eye care for vulnerable children receiving treatment at Ruharo Mission Hospital in Mbarara City.
Dr. Keith Waddell, a British-born ophthalmologist, has dedicated more than 60 years to providing life-changing eye care and surgical services in Uganda. Through his work, he has transformed the lives of many people affected by eye conditions and made a significant contribution to the development of ophthalmic services in Uganda.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Waddell thanked all participants for taking part in the marathon, noting that their contribution would help save the lives of many children. He also thanked Almighty God for enabling him to dedicate his life to serving the people of Uganda, particularly by helping children living with disabilities and eye conditions to live better lives. “It’s a gift and a privilege from God to come and serve here,” Dr. Keith said.
The Chief Runner, Prof. Kenneth Kagame, who also serves as the Chairperson of BSU Council, congratulated Dr. Waddell upon reaching 90 years of age, describing the milestone as a remarkable achievement. Prof. Kagame also commended the participants who completed the marathon and encouraged them to make physical exercise part of their daily lives. “As you run, as you get tired and accelerate, know that you are saving a life, but perhaps, to also emphasise, you are running to save your own life. Therefore, make it a habit every day,” Prof. Kagame said. He further urged parents and caregivers to seek medical attention for their children as early as possible, particularly when they notice signs of illness or eye-related conditions.
The Assistant to the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Rev. Canon Bobs Mwesigye, who represented the Bishop of Ankole Diocese and Chancellor of Bishop Stuart University, Rt. Rev. Assoc. Prof. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, commended Dr. Waddell for his decades of service to humanity. Rev. Canon Mwesigye noted that Dr. Waddell’s commitment to helping others is a powerful way of serving God and called upon the public to emulate his example by supporting and caring for people in need.
