Bishop Stuart University, in collaboration with Scale-Up Research Centre Ltd, has begun initial preparations for the launch of the BANATHERM Project, an innovation funded by STI and aimed at creating value from banana stem waste. The project seeks to extract insulation materials from banana fibres for use in automotive, food packaging, and building industries.
By transforming what is often discarded into a valuable resource, the initiative is expected to boost farmers’ incomes through the sale of banana stems, while also reducing the country’s dependence on imported synthetic insulation materials. In addition, BANATHERM products will be environmentally friendly, supporting ongoing efforts in conservation and sustainable development.
Previously, the project team held a meeting with the University’s top management and engineering team to align expectations and discuss structural requirements. Yesterday, 14th April 2026, the team engaged the Isingiro District Local Government production unit alongside the Public Relations Office to harmonize plans for the official project launch.
