Cymbopogon citratus D.C Stapf (Lemon grass)\, Ocimum bacilicum (Basil) L. Salvia rosmarinus Spenn (Rosemary)\, Eucalyptus citriodora (Lemon eucalyptus) Hook and Mentha piperata (Peppermint) are some of the essential oil crops that have proven to be of economic importance to Uganda`s agricultural sector with feasible applications in development of public health products including Herbal teas for management of lifestyle diseases\, cosmetics and detergents as therapeutic antibiotic agents and indoor use as air fresheners (car and in-room fresheners) and in development of insect repellents. The project implementing team in 2021 received funding from Mak-RIF to commercialize the production of essential oil crops; lemongrass\, lemon eucalyptus\, rosemary and lavender. The research grant purposely targets to develop essential oil-based products including cough syrups and lozenges\,  cosmetics\, formulated essential oils for massage and topical ointments and hydrosol-based beverages. \nThe project team has developed an out-growers scheme where farmers are trained in nursery bed establishment\, aromatic crops garden establishment and Maintainance\, value addition to aromatic crop produce and rational promotion. \nA farmers survey in 2021 revealed the most grown aromatic crops in Uganda;   these included lemon grass\, rosemary\, citronella and lemon eucalyptus and farmers groups from the best producing districts like Isingiro were invited for a farmers` training in value addition to aromatic crops at Ethnobiology laboratory (Bishop Stuart University\, a partner institution). \nThe Project team has developed several products including cough syrups\, herbal jelly\, multipurpose detergents from herbal hydrosols and essential oils-based ointments for physiotherapy.
