Vice Chancellor

This website is intended to provide the profile information on academic and professional programmes offered by Bishop Stuart University as a newly established Christian Tertiary Institution in the beautiful hills of Kakoba in Mbarara Municipality.

Several degree, diploma and Certificate programmes have been offered since 2003.

Our Senate continues to consider additional programmes and courses. Fortunately, we have ample land for future developments.

An endeavour is being made to ensure that programmes and courses offered are professionally balanced and holistic in scope. Our main emphasis is on quality and experience of academic and administrative staff employed. We intend to introduce a policy of periodic monitoring and up-dating what is taught and how it is taught. We also plan to introduce a few Core-courses of limited scope to strengthen the above concept of balancing course contents (i.e. balancing education of the Head with education of the Hand and the education of the Heart). Co-curricular activities are to be given special attention at Bishop Stuart University.

Our University Motto is Our God Reigns. Consequently, our policy is to warmly welcome all qualified children of God regardless of their gender, religion and nationality.

University Mission is "Producing multi-sectoral leaders/operators, who know the way, show the way and go the way".

I hope and pray that this website will lead many Ugandans and other nationals with stipulated minimum qualifications to benefit from the programmes we are offering.

Historical Background PDF Print E-mail

BSU is found in South Western Uganda, in Ankole Diocese, Mbarara District, Uganda. The University races its humble beginnings from Bishop Tucker Theological College Mukono, which was founded in 1913 as a Normal School and over the years evolved into Uganda Christian University (UCU) - Mukono in 1992.

The normal school was transferred to Ruharo next to Mbarara High School in 1952 under Rev. Hugh Hodge who founded a Grade II Co-education training College known as Bishop Stuart College at Kakoba.

From 1952 – 1981, Bishop Stuart College trained grade II and grade III Teachers. In 1982, the College was transferred to Kibingo giving way to a National Teachers’ College to train Diploma Teachers for Secondary and Primary schools.

In March 2002, the Diocese Synod of Ankole Diocese resolved to start a University at Kakoba hill named Bishop Stuart University (BSU). From 2002 – June 2006, BSU operated under Interim Authority of National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) but also as a study Centre of UCU – Mukono.

BSU was licensed as an Independent University on 23rd June 2006. BSU is now aspiring to achieve a Charter.
